Dexcom International appointed Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA) to provide the civil engineering design, supporting technical and planning documentation and construction supervision for Project Roadrunner.

The facility represents a significant investment in the region and provides substantial long-term employment opportunities, strengthening Ireland’s position as a global hub for life sciences. The development comprises a main facility building which includes a production and distribution centre with associated administration and utilities buildings catering to ca. 500 staff located on a 30ha site. A separate central utilities compound including a 38kv ESB substation and fire-sprinkler storage/pumphouse services the main facility.

The main objectives of CSEA’s commission on Project Roadrunner were to:

  • Provide civil engineering, transportation and flood risk expertise from inception (conceptual layouts and site master planning), through planning, tender, construction and close out.
  • Liaise with local and national public and private institutions (GCC, TII, N6 Concessions, Teagasc, IDA) to facilitate the provision of infrastructure.
  • Design coordination within a multi-disciplinary team.

The key civil / transport elements of the project are as follows:

  • 8km of new access road infrastructure including 650m of dedicated bus corridors, 1 no. internal roundabout, 1 no. mini roundabout, 2 no. concrete delivery yards including HGV docking stations and a shared use raised table entrance plaza.
  • 450+ parking spaces of which 17 are disabled parking and 112 are fully serviced EV parking with provisions made to expand the EV charging to all parking spaces.
  • Bus and taxi set down areas and bicycle parking spaces
  • 350m of dedicated cycle lanes, 1.4km of concrete footpath and a 2km Ballylusk gravel surfaced nature trail
  • 8km of underground surface water pipework ranging from 150mm to 900mmØ, including 2 no. underground storage tanks, 12000m2 of porous asphalt. several bio-infiltration areas, rainwater harvesting, green roof, filter drains, a feature pond with a ca. 1m permanent water level which doubles as firewater storage and includes a downstream penstock actuator valve, multiple petrol separators and a three-cell integrated constructed wetland.
  • 6km of combined domestic and industrial foul water infrastructure including a local pump station and a package MBBR wastewater treatment plant.
  • 4km of water supply infrastructure delivering 50 000 l/day
  • 165000m3 of bulk earthworks comprised of 50000m3 of topsoil and 115000m3 subsoil
  • 17km of underground ducting
